Brown County saw a low voter turnout for the Aug. 2 primary election with only 5.61 percent of registered voters casting their ballots. There were 1,612 total ballots cast of Brown County’s 28,730 registered voters.

The Aug. 2 primary election held on Tuesday was a “stray from the norm” for Brown County voters, a special primary election that was very costly for taxpayers.

According to the Secretary of State’s office, lawmakers gave a total of about $20 million to county election offices to help cover the costs of the second primary.

Brown County was split into two voting districts for the Aug. 2 primary election, District 63 in the East and District 90 in the West.

In the District 90 Republican primary race for Ohio State Representative, it was Brian Baldridge defeating Calvin Eli Robinson 3,056 to 424, according to the unofficial results.

Baldridge got the nod from the majority of Brown County Republican voters in the Aug. 2 primary, garnering 441 votes compared to Robinson’s 57 votes.

Andrew Dodson ran unopposed in District 90 on the Democrat ballot.

Adam C. Bird ran unopposed on the Republican ballot for Ohio State Representative in District 63 (3,322 votes).

Richard J. Perry ran unopposed as a “write-in” on the Democrat ballot in District 63, receiving only 123 votes in the district.

In the Democrat primary for Member of State Central Committee (Man) of the 14th District, it was Ben Brady receiving 1,821 votes and Randy E. Basham receiving 1,751 in the unofficial results.

In the 14th District Republican primary for Member of Central Committee (Man), it was Greg Simpson receiving 6,675 votes, Chris Hicks receiving 1,960 votes, Christopher Orleck with 1,331 votes, and Melvin A. Dean with 1,079 votes.

Melissa A. Cropper ran unopposed on the Democrat ballot for Member of State Central Committee (Woman) of the 14th District, and Gloria Martin ran unopposed on the Republican ballot for Member of State Central Committee (Woman) of the 14th District.

The second primary held Aug. 2 was due to Republicans and Democrats on the state’s redistricting commission failing to agree on how to fairly draw congressional districts. Five maps were submitted by the redistricting commission, all of them rejected by the Ohio Supreme Court.

Federal court decided earlier this year that one of the maps rejected by the Ohio Supreme Court be used in the Aug. 2 primary election, because it was the best they had when speaking of fairness among the voting population.

It was in 2018 when Ohio voters approved ending gerrymandering, which required the redrawing of congressional maps throughout the state.
