At its July 10 Ripley Village Council meeting, Ripley resident Kathy Gast (former mayor of Ripley), spoke briefly to members of council regarding possible street lights being considered for Shawn Street. “I was told by one of the village street employees that three new light poles were going up on our street,” Gast said. “That was the first I have ever heard of these three wooden poles with street lights were going up. “My question to council is, who thinks this is a good idea, without asking the residents on Shawn Street how they felt about the idea? Didn’t we get all our electric wiring underground so we could get rid of all the poles? Gast said it was her understanding that Councilman Travis Arnett had made the recommendation at a recent council meeting. Councilman Arnett said it was simply a suggestion he made for the benefit and safety of residents living on Shawn Street. He said no action had been taken, but that the street is very dark and he felt is might be made safer with lights. He also said that the street workers were only taking measurements for the lights, in case eventually, the village could get a cost estimate, should it decide to put the lights on the street.
