Another phone scam is making the rounds in Brown County. This time, the caller claims to be from the Brown County Sheriff’s Office with a civil warrant for the caller. “In one call, they said they were from the Brown County Sheriff’s Office. In another call, they said that they were from the Brown County Sheriff’s Office Civil Division,” said Brown County Sheriff Gordon Ellis. “They will say that they need a credit card number or will instruct the victim to go get a gift card to pay the fine.” Ellis said that phone calls of that nature are not how the sheriff’s office does business. “We never call people if we are serving a warrant or civil paper on them. We will come directly to you,” he said. “If anybody calls you and says they are from the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and wants to talk about a warrant, it is not us.” Ellis asked that if anyone receives a similar call, they should write down the number and report it to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office at (937) 378-4435.
