The Western Brown High School Mock Trial team continued their season success by advancing to the State Competition after winning both their trials at the Regional competition held in Portsmouth, Ohio. At the Regional competition, Western Brown defeated Warren High School of Washington County in the morning and River Valley High School of Gallia County in the afternoon. Additionally, the Western Brown team won three individual awards at their trials: Nicole Jenkins, best attorney, Maria Bohrer, best attorney, and MacKenzie Young, best witness.

The Western Brown High School Mock Trial team is advancing to the State Competition for the first time since 2003. The Western Brown High School Mock Trial team began their season practice schedule in October and previously advanced from the district competition held in Batavia on January 29th. The Ohio Mock Trial High School State Competition takes place March 10-12th in Columbus at the Franklin County Courthouse and the Statehouse. The Western Brown Mock Trial team is led by Western Brown High School teacher Melissa Brown and Brown County Assistant Prosecutors Zac Corbin and Nick Owens.

“I could not be more proud of this group of students and the way they are representing Western Brown High School,” said Assistant Brown County Prosecutor Zac Corbin. “The critical thinking skills and ability to think quickly on their feet are traits that will stick with them for the rest of their lives,” Corbin added.

According to the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education, the governing organization for the Ohio Mock Trial competition, each year nearly 3,500 high school students across the state participate and more than 1,000 legal professionals volunteer their time as team legal advisors, case committee members, competition committee members, judges and district coordinators. Further, the statewide competition is now the largest non-athletic competition in Ohio and among the largest in the country. The state champion team represents Ohio in a national competition to be held in May in Boise, Idaho.

Award winners from the competition include Maria Bohrer and Nicole Jenkins for best attorney and MacKenzie Young for best witness.
