The Brown County Grand Jury met recently and handed down indictments to 17 individuals, including Heather Marie Johnson and Scott Jeffrey Bryant.

Johnson, 24, and Bryant, 28, of Batavia, were both charged by the grand jury on Oct. 22 with one count of illegal assembly or possession of chemicals for the manufacture of drugs, a third-degree felony, aggravated trafficking in drugs, a fourth-degree felony, and aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony. According to the bill of indictment, the drug in question is methamphetamine.

According to documents filed with the Brown County Municipal Court, Johnson and Bryant were arrested Oct. 4 in Mt. Orab after officers with the Mt. Orab Police Department and Ohio State Highway Patrol made a traffic stop following a drug deal with a confidential informant.

Johnson and Bryant were found with two boxes of pseudoephedrine, which according to a probable cause affidavit, Bryant had traded methamphetamine for. Bryant was also allegedly preparing to manufacture more methamphetamine with the pseudoephedrine.

After searching the vehicle, the officers also allegedly found another box of pseudoephedrine, a plastic container containing aluminum foil, and three more empty boxes of pseudoephedrine.

In an interview with the officers, Johnson allegedly told them that she had been working as a prostitute to pay for her heroin addiction, and she, Bryant, and another undisclosed individual had used heroin the morning of their arrest. Johnson also alleged that she and Bryant had purchased lithium batteries and Coleman fuel recently and that Bryant would take the materials to manufacture methamphetamine to another individual.

Bryant, in an interview with officers, denied that he was preparing to use the pseudoephedrine to manufacture methamphetamine, stating that the pseudoephedrine was for his nasal congestion. Bryant however did admit that he hadn’t received a doctor’s advice or orders to use pseudoephedrine for clearing up his sinuses.

Both Johnson and Bryant were arraigned on Oct. 23 and as of press time, the two remain in custody on $50,000 bond each.

If convicted, the pair could each face a maximum of five and a half years in prison, as well as a maximum fine in excess of $15,000.
