May was designated Senior Citizen Month in 1963 by President Kennedy. The actual name, “Senior Citizens Month,” was changed at a later date to “Older Americans Month.” The recognition month has always been May. The idea behind this designation is to honor and celebrate the contributions made by Older Americans to communities and our nation.

Ohio Valley Manor held activities to celebrate the month.

Employees from Merchants Bank in Higginsport visited OVM and presented residents with goodie bags packed full of snacks, games, puzzles and other items. The residents were very grateful for the acknowledgement and the gifts.

The Red Oak Ranchers 4-H Club made their annual May visit to OVM with dogs, cats, rabbits and ducks. Marilyn Cluxton, Head Advisor of the Club, said, “The kids love this event and look forward to it every year. They love interacting with the seniors and sharing their animals with them.”

The residents appreciate the time when they are with the animals and the children. They pet the animals, talk to them and hold them. The benefits of Pet Therapy are very well documented. Physically, Pet Therapy may reduce blood pressure, improve cardiovascular health and actually help diminish physical pain. From a mental standpoint, Pet Therapy can lift spirits and lessen depression. Visiting with the pets decreases feelings of isolation and encourages communication. It also provides comfort to the seniors and helps lower their anxiety levels.
