So where is the change?

Normally mid-year elections are not very interesting and generally do not create a great deal of attention among the electorate. This year’s 2010 mid-year election seems to go against that premise and seem to be generating a great deal of interest among the voters of the nation.
This year’s election seems to be shaping up as an approval or disapproval rating of Barack Obama and the current Democratic administration. Two years ago President Obama was swept into the White House along with a Democratic controlled House and Senate on the platform of change, change from the Bush administration and their seemingly bungling of the economy and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. President Obama and his cronies in Congress were set to change all the wrongs of the previous administration and create a Utopian society in our country.
Many of our nation listened to those words and got caught up in the excitement of what he was saying and elected him the 44th President of the United States. Two short years later the majority of those who voted for him in 2008 have become very disillusioned with his performance in the oval office. Most political pundits believe that voters will show that dissatisfaction by returning the House and Senate to the Republicans in 2010 and send President Obama back to the streets of Chicago in 2012.

ABERDEEN – Council members, elected and appointed officials and members of the general public clashed once again Monday evening in a lengthy council session laden with conflict.
Laced with arguments about a variety of issues, the clearly inharmonious atmosphere of Monday’s meeting has become commonplace when elected and appointed officials come together to handle village business in Aberdeen, according to numerous individuals who frequent the council meetings.
Mayor Garland Renchen’s recommendation of a candidate for Village Administrator was one point of significant debate during the three and one-half hour council session. Nearly an hour into Monday’s meeting council member Jay Castle requested an executive session, closed to the public, to discuss personnel. The call for an executive session came as debate became heated concerning the use of volunteer and community service workers on beautification projects like cleaning up sidewalks and curbs, and council member Billie Eitel voted against the motion because she said she did not know what would be discussed and did not think it was appropriate at the time.
The five remaining council members approved the motion, however, and approximately one hour later council emerged from executive session. Upon returning, Renchen presented Manchester resident Jerry Jones as his appointment to fill the village administrator’s position. Renchen said Jones is experienced and capable of handling many of the utility-related issues faced by the village and is the best-qualified candidate to help the village move forward as it prepares for mayor changes to its water system.

Harrison Pedigo presents information to the Ripley Village Council concerning the restoration project he completed at Old RipleyCemetery at the Ripley Village Council meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 10.
RIPLEY – Members of Ripley Village Council and Mayor Tom Leonard honored Ripley resident and aspiring Eagle Scout Harrison Pedigo for his work at the Old Ripley Cemetery last week. Pedigo approached council earlier this year about starting a project on the old cemetery, which included brush cleanup, building an entrance way and a sign, and creating a pamphlet detailing who is buried in the Old Ripley Cemetery as well as the history associated with them.
“Hopefully people will be more aware of the historical significance there,” Pedigo said. “That was the goal of the project.”
Pedigo said the project took well over 100 hours, but that he was glad to work toward a better, cleaner village of Ripley.
