GEORGETOWN — On a historic evening, the Georgetown Lady G-Men kept their 2015 season alive with a rout of Finneytown in the sectional playoffs.

Although the game was much closer than the scoreline showed, the Lady G-Men’s finishing proved to be the difference as they defeated the Lady Wildcats, 4-0, at Georgetown High School on Monday, October 19.

Senior Cheyenne Dunseith scored a pair of goals and, while freshman duo Lauren Carter and Amaya Lovell each scored a goal and had an assist.

“Overall it was a good win. It always feels good to beat a team 4-0, especially a team like Finneytown who is playing top teams in the city,” Lady G-Men head coach Ashley Silvis-Corbin said.

The Lady G-Men entered the evening hosting their first sectional playoffs match since 2003, and they quickly imposed themselves on the game, controlling the tempo and keeping the ball in their attacking half of the field. Midway through the first half, although the game began to even out, possession-wise, Lovell found space down the right wing and crossed into the middle, where Carter’s far-post run met the ball and stabbed it home past Finneytown goalkeeper Tess Enderle.

Following the goal, Finneytown woke up and began to play with a bit more urgency, and started to push the ball down the wings in Georgetown’s defensive half of the field.

But while the Lady Wildcats created a few half-chances, Lady G-Men freshman goalkeeper Bella Clifton gobbled up the ball on every occasion and cleaned up any dangerous moments. Lady G-Men senior midfielder Rachel Gibbons always seemed to be buzzing around the ball as well, switching the field from left to right and breaking up opposition attacks.

“She is a strong player in the center for us,” Silvis-Corbin said. “She doesn’t have a lot of stats but she is wherever the ball is, I can always count on her to get it. She gives great through balls, she wins them all in the air, and she’s a strong player.”

In the second half, the Lady Wildcats nearly tied the game with a goal with 32 minutes remaining but one of the referees called the play back for a foul in the box.

Late in the match, the Lady G-Men took advantage of one of their few opportunities of the match as Lovell fed Dunseith for Dunseith’s first goal of the game, giving Georgetown a 2-0 lead with 13:16 remaining.

Georgetown took a 3-0 lead after Carter found Lovell down the left wing, before Lovell dribbled through three Lady Wildcats defenders, cut into the middle, and fired a low strike past Enderle with 2:30 remaining in the match.

Dunseith put the icing on the win in the final seconds of the match with a fantastic goal off a corner kick. Dunseith took the corner kick from the right of the goal, and curled it in past Enderle without anyone else touching it for an olympico goal, finalizing the score at 4-0.

“That’s what I was trying to do,” Dunseith said. “I’ve done that before, but it’s been a while. I was really happy.”

The victory was the Lady G-Men’s first since they last hosted a sectional match in 2003. The team hasn’t won sectionals since 1998, according to Georgetown’s record books.

“I think that it is important. Since I started we went from the bottom seed and we’ve made our way up to being seeded No. 9. I think it’s huge for the program and it’s a confidence booster. I think the kids that we have coming in and the seniors that we have are leaders and strong leaders for us.”
