Even without a head coach in place, an annual Georgetown boys basketball tradition kept on going.

Last week, the Georgetown varsity boys basketball team hosted their annual camp for third through eighth graders, with more than 30 campers signing up to take part. Former Georgetown teammates Jay Chadwell, Jess Chadwell, and Daniel Oliver served as coaches and members of the varsity G-Men team helped out during the camp.

“It went well,” Jay Chadwell said. “It was a decent turnout and everybody had fun. I think the kids really enjoyed themselves.”

During the camp, the kids worked on their basketball fundamentals. The coaches set up six stations to test the player’s defense, rebounding, passing, dribbling, shooting, and making layups. Then, towards the end of the game, the kids took part in a 3-on-3 challenge and a hot-shot challenge, in which they took shots from different spots on the floor, earning more points for a farther shot, and competing against their friends at the other end of the court.

“It’s always fun for the kids to do something like that,” Chadwell said. “The stations are so structured, and it’s a good thing, but the kids attention span wears off after a while so they want to just play and put their basketball skills to the test. So it’s always good to have those competitions to have the kids strive for something on the last day.

For Chadwell, it was a bit of a blast from the past, after competing in the camp himself as a kid more than 15 years ago.

“I participated in them, my little brother who helped me out in the camp, he participated in them,” Chadwell said. “It was nice to see the high schoolers. It was fun to see us, what we did and how we acted, and what we learned at that camp and to teach the next generation those same skills.”
